Step by Step

What to do in a dental emergency

1

Call us right away

Call Broadview Dental Clinic at (416) 466-6400 during office hours. We reserve time for same-day emergencies and will tell you exactly what to do next.

2

Ease the pain and protect the tooth

Rinse gently with warm salt water and hold a cold compress against your cheek to reduce swelling. For a knocked-out tooth, keep it moist in milk or saliva — handle it by the crown, not the root — and bring it with you.

3

Come in for same-day care

During office hours we will see you as soon as possible. If you cannot reach us after hours, use the after-hours emergency service listed below.

Common Dental Emergencies

Until you can see us

General guidance for the most common emergencies — but when in doubt, call us. These are not a substitute for being seen by a dentist.

Severe toothache

Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove any trapped debris. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum. Call us if the pain persists.

Knocked-out tooth

Handle the tooth by the crown, rinse it gently, and keep it moist in milk or saliva. Getting to a dentist quickly gives the best chance of saving it.

Chipped or broken tooth

Save any pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water, and use a cold compress for swelling. We can often repair the tooth the same day.

Lost filling or crown

Keep the crown if you have it and avoid chewing on that side. Call us to have it re-cemented or replaced before the tooth is damaged further.

Swelling or abscess

Facial swelling or a painful bump on the gum can signal infection. Rinse with warm salt water and contact us promptly — this should not be left untreated.
